Illinois Driver’s Licenses for Undocumented Immigrants

Illinois, where I live, is among the overwhelming majority of states that issue driver’s licenses to deferred action (DACA) recipients. The state went one step further recently, signing a new law in January 2013 that allows undocumented immigrants to receive Illinois driver's licenses. The license will be valid for three years, and will require training and insurance. It has limits, however, because it cannot be used as identification, for example to purchase a firearm. Backed by Democrats Governor Quinn and Mayor Emanuel, and some of Illinois' prominent Republicans, the law was applauded as a "common sense" approach that is to take effect in October.

  • Robert, he was calm, supportive and had a lot of knowledge ...

“My husband applied for my green card and we prepared the documents on our own, but unfortunately I got an RFE for the same documents which we had already submitted. So we thought of hiring a good lawyer for our case, I called up a few lawyers and explained them my case to get 1 free initial consultation, out of the ones we called, I really liked Robert, he was calm, supportive and had a lot of knowledge on such cases. I quickly decided that I would go with him for my case. We met him the next day and discussed our case in detail, soon after we got a list of documents that were needed by his office, we promptly replied, he prepared our case again , we had dew meetings in between and finally my case was approved, He also helped a lot with our interview preparation and also came with us to the interview venue , where he spent more than 2 hours with us explaining the process, he also appeared with us in the interview and was a great support. I finally cleared the interview under his expert guidance. I would definitely recommend him to my friends.”

  • Excellent Service Better Attorney

“Robert made sure I understood everything that was going on ad answered all my questions to the best of his knowledge. Before going to Robert for my immigration status, I looked around but other attorneys were not nearly as insightful or helpful as Robert. Robert always made sure that I was prepared for everything that I was going to through. For the interview he prepared me so well that I was not nervous when talking to the officers. Robert made sure I was aware of all the possible outcomes when I acquired his services. Robert made sure that I had the best experience possible for the trials that I was going to face with the immigration process. Result: Form I-751 Petition with waiver of joint filing (good faith marriage that ended in divorce) approved”

  • Impressive work and professionalism.

“My husband and I had a very complicated I601 and I212 waiver case and had to hire an attorney no matter what. We searched online for weeks trying to find the best one since we were living in Costa Rica and wanted an attorney from Chicago. We hired Robert after reading his impressive curriculum and experience, plus he did not have any issues with the bar. I am a Costa Rican citizen married to a USC. All of our communication was done over the phone and email but that didn't make it less personal. I am a complete "worrier", I worry about every single thing that can go wrong and I ask a ton of questions. He was always happy to answer them in a timely manner. With Robert's guidance and expertise we were able to put together a very strong argument as to why my husband couldn't live in Costa Rica and why he needed me with him. Although this is the truth, it is extremely hard to know how to accurately prove this to USCIS, you really have to know how the waiver process works and doing it without a responsible and honest lawyer is not what would recommend to ANYONE. Robert helped us file the waiver and it was approved today, November 21st 2013!!! I WOULD ABSOLUTELY, HANDS DOWN recommend Attorney Robert Milla for any immigration matter, he knows what he is doing and has the experience needed to win cases. My husband and I will be forever thankful to Robert for bringing us together again”

  • As of today I am a proud and happy American citizen

“After 4 years of anguish of what will happen with my case I almost had given up. I kept thinking I had ruined it for my kids and we might have to go back. I met Robert when I was almost burned out from all the worries. It felt like meeting an old friend and we had a talk and went through options. He leaves the big words when he works to get the case done, not to show you that he is a great lawyer. But if you trust your heart you will see that you just got lucky stumbling on him. No false promises, I knew all the time where my case was standing and the risks I could face. He thinks ahead and covers all the gaps to get the case done. Later I learned that he actually teaches immigration classes as well but even when he is busy he gets right back to you answering your questions and giving updates. I am very happy I had Robert by my side in my most difficult time and will always keep wishing him well. Thank you Robert you will always have a fond place in our hearts : )”

  • We highly recommend Atty Robert Milla and Associates.

“We were married in 2009 and got denied the first time it was filed. We got a lawyer to help us and it took years of waiting and nothing came out of it. Until my wife found Atty Robert Milla on the internet and with his very exceptional and successful work on immigration based cases, we decided to asked him to represent us . He told us what documents we need to re submit to follow up the case and waited for a decision. And finally my wife got her green card before Christmas this year exactly 8 years after we first filed it but Atty Robert Milla was able to get it for us , when we thought it was a hopeless case. We are so happy and very grateful for Atty Robert Milla for all the help and understanding and patience to our never ending questions and also to his paralegal Stylvia . Thank you very much. More power.”
